6 Games to Play in Your Career

I started to follow David Fallarme (through my friend Alexis Collado’s referral!)

The way that he once framed happiness in careers is knowing what game you are playing among the 6:

  1. Security Game (salaryman)
  2. Money Game (hedge fund managers)
  3. Mastery Game (artist)
  4. Autonomy Game (nomadic freelancer)
  5. Influence Game (politician)
  6. Altruism Game (social worker)

“Miserable people play the wrong game, try to win all the games or feel forced by society to play the wrong games. Playing the right game helps you accelerate your career -- in the direction you want.”

I love this framework. Especially because I love games.

Upon hearing this, I immediately said “that’s me!” to the Autonomy Game.

Freedom motivates me. However it took me a while to realize this. For a while, I “felt forced by society to play the wrong games,” particularly Influence & Money.

Clarity in what I’m trying to win makes the game more fun along the way.
