Just Do the Thing: Impostor Syndrome Lessons

My future mom-in-law taught me a good lesson on impostor syndrome you probably won't like. She's retired (early, btw!) and still keeping herself busy, dreaming of new projects. Recently, she decided to start a coffee shop in the Philippines. She is so committed that she's started barista lessons to learn how to make the perfect cup of coffee. ☕ But there was one thing we noticed: every time she made coffee for us, she never drank it herself. So we asked about it. Me & my fiancé: “Tita, do you want some coffee?” Mom-in-law: "No I actually don't drink coffee." Me & my fiancé: “Oh! You don't drink coffee? Why are you starting a coffee shop?” Mom-in-law: “Because I want to.” That's it. She does not need to be a coffee fanatic. She does not care about the reasons why she might not qualify. She just wants to do the thing. She's the perfect example of "you can just do things" and acts anyway. TAKEAWAY As a Filipino woman building in spaces where majority of the CEOs & founders do not look like me, I've had my fair share of impostor syndrome. My biggest lesson from her on this: Just get over myself and do the thing. View original post on LinkedIn.
