The first job offer I got out of college was rescinded because I was on a visa. Then they rescinded the rescind.... 🤯 This is a story about grit, being an immigrant, and the frustrations of a big corporation. Six months before I graduated, I was interviewing with a bunch of companies. After a bunch of failures and rejections, I eventually got a job offer as a consultant at a bigtech company. One of my close friends (also an international student) got an offer there too. They even flew me out to Florida to hang out with the other new grads who got offers. I was a new grad, excited and starry-eyed. I was so compelled by the experience, the glamour, the company, being in Florida with all these amazing new grads. When I got back home, I signed the offer and sent it to my recruiter. A couple days pass. No response. I follow up. They finally respond. Turns out a requirement of the program is that you have to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident... So basically after EVERYTHING—going through the whole interview process, getting an offer, flying me out to Florida, getting me excited—they're rejecting me because I’m an international student, a fact they knew and that I had to disclose from the very beginning. But here’s the thing: I knew my friend was also an international student and didn’t receive the same rejection. I also knew of other international students already working there. Something was off. So I reached out to people I knew inside the company. Asked them to ask around & help me understand what was going on. Eventually, after a bunch of back and forth navigating the org’s internal mess, they said they were willing to rescind the rescind... To this day, I’m still not quite sure why. They said something about changes around international applications, mixed signals between departments and offices, and miscommunication. Honestly, at that point, I didn’t care. If the company treated me that way before I even started, who knew how much worst it was going to be working there? I have a LOT of shi**y stories like this from being an immigrant in the US. A lot. But if there's anything I learned.. it’s made me the gritty person I am today! And I’m so glad I didn’t end up working for ay-bee-em. Because otherwise, I wouldn’t be on the path I’m on now. TAKEAWAY: Things work out, even if it’s not in the way you expected. View original post on LinkedIn.
