Why Most Founders Shouldn't Build in Public

Most founders should NOT be building in public.

Building in public is just really noisy so it feels like everyone is doing it.

I actually think more founders are building in private and maybe that's fine.

Here are 2 reasons why:

  1. It's not where customers are. I was often told by advisors to speak at conferences or post more online. But my customers were not hanging out in these places so it felt like a big waste of time.

Everyone says it's great for distribution but if your users aren’t reading your threads or watching your content, then it’s not distribution. It’s a distraction.

  1. You don’t even enjoy it. If creating content drains you and feels like a slog, it’s not sustainable. If it’s not sustainable, your content won't get better and it won’t convert.

Instead, you need to find the go-to-market strategy that actually energizes you aka founder-distribution fit! 😃

You don’t need to show up on Twitter or LinkedIn every day to grow your startup. There are plenty of other ways to acquire users that fit your strengths.

TAKEAWAY: Just because everyone else is doing it doesn’t mean you have to. Find the channel that brings you both users and energy.
